Watch Your Language

For some reason, this memory has stuck with me till this day and I thought I’d share it with you because it can make a good lesson.

This time we’re going way back to the days I was in elementary school.

The school day was winding down and I was helping my teacher clean up the classroom. All of a sudden, my teacher got my attention and asked me,

”Ellisen, do you want to sweep?”

When I heard that, I was thinking in my head, “What does sweep mean? Is that a candy? It sounds like a bad thing.”

So I shook my head and walked away. Soon after, my teacher asked one of my classmates. He nodded, went to grab the broom and started sweeping.

”Oh...so that’s what sweeping is,” I thought.

So what was the point of sharing that random story from my childhood?

To let you know that when you write your emails, watch your language. If you use words that your readers might not understand, they’re going to get turned off. It’s best to match your language with theirs. And if you’re wondering how you can do that, go back to your market research.

One of the keys to doing effective marketing is to find out the language your target customers use and mirror that not just in your email copy, but your sales letters, your websites, and even your videos.

One industry that's notorious for using complicated language is the technology industry. They throw around all these terminologies that their average customers might not even understand, and that'll cause them to get confused and walk away.

So you want to simplify your language that makes it easy for your target customers to understand what your product or service is, and how it can benefit them.
